Manga Masterpiece: Fullmetal Alchemist

Article by Jaeden Moe Fullmetal Alchemist is a shounen manga written by Hiromu Arakawa and was released in 2001 and concluded in 2010 with a total of 108 chapters with 27 volumes. The manga is about a boy and his brother named Edward Elric and his younger brother, Alphonse Elric, whose father left their family without a reason. Their mother soon dies from an epidemic and they attempt to revive her utilizing a technique called human transmutation. Human transmutation is

considered taboo among alchemists and it went wrong, leaving Edward with only one arm and one leg and Alphonse had his soul trapped in a suit of armor. Although Ed gets prosthetics to replace his missing limbs.Together, they go on a journey to try to retrieve their bodies by finding a stone called the Philosopher’s stone.

After the incident, Ed gets recruited by a man named Roy Mustang to become a state alchemist (state alchemists are alchemists who are recruited to by the military). The brothers search for the stone for 3 years and while on their journey to restore their bodies, they are hunted down by homunculi (artificial humans created by alchemy) that go by the Seven Deadly Sins. The brothers leave to a place called Fort Briggs due to a general’s orders. They learn that the homunculi need the brothers, 3 other alchemists who have committed human transmutation, and an entire country worth of people for a sacrifice so that their power-

hungry father, who happens to be named Father, can create a massive Philosopher’s stone to absorb the power and knowledge of God when “the day of reckoning” arrives. The brothers encounter their father, Hohenheim. Hohenheim possesses great knowledge of Father and has been finding out ways to stop him. The brothers, Hohenheim, and the military work together to try and stop Father before he can gather the requirements to create the massive Philosopher’s stone and the power of God.

The mangaka, Hiromu Arakawa, was known best for creating Fullmetal Alchemist but was also the creator of other works like Silver spoon, and The Heroic Legend of Arislan. Fullmetal Alchemist received two anime adaptations, Fullmetal Alchemist, and Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood. I read this manga and I was really impressed with how well written the characters and the story is along with the great world-building. It’s one of the best mangas I’ve read and I recommend this manga to all Anime and Manga lovers or just people who want something to read to pass the time.
